Women with very large, pendulous breasts may experience a variety of medical problems caused by the excessive weight, from back and neck pain or skin irritation to skeletal deformities and even breathing problems. Bra straps may leave indentations in women's shoulders. Additionally, unusually large breasts can make a woman or teenage girl feel extremely self-conscious and may limit her activities. Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is designed for such women. In order to achieve the results desired, a very exact and customized plan is drawn directly on the patient's skin prior to the procedure. The procedure removes fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts, making them smaller, lighter, and firmer. It can also reduce the size of the areola, the dark skin surrounding the nipple. The goal of breast reduction is to achieve the look of smaller, better shaped breasts in proportion to the rest of the body. General anesthesia is used, and the procedure takes about 90 minutes on average. There is very little risk of blood transfusion and drains are typically not used. This is an outpatient procedure with return to work typically in one week with some lifting restrictions. Scars require 6-12 months or more to fully mature and lighten.
