For the most part breast shape is genetically determined, but over the years, factors such as pregnancy, nursing, weight loss and gravity can take their toll on female breast shape. As the skin loses its elasticity or volume, the breasts will often lose shape and firmness and begin to sag.

Breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to raise and re-shape sagging breasts. Mastopexy can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple, and reposition the nipple. If breasts are small, or have lost volume after pregnancy or weight loss, breast implants may be inserted in conjunction with mastopexy to increase both firmness and size.
