Because of the incredible results, abdominoplasty or a 'tummy tuck' is one of Dr. Leigh's favorite plastic surgery procedures to perform for his patients. The changes incurred due to pregnancy, weight loss, or even genetics (stretch marks, pot belly from loosened muscle, and loose skin) can be greatly improved in this operation.

The extra skin and stretch marks of the lower abdomen are removed and the muscles tightened in exchange for lower abdominal and belly button scars. Shaping of the remaining fat can sculpt the abdomen into an athletic contour, if desired. This procedure is very often done along with liposuction to address contour concerns of the hips and thighs as well. This is truly a blend of science and artistic flair.

As with all body contouring procedures, the patient has to be dedicated to the results and must us a common sense approach to diet and exercise to maintain his or her result.

The tummy tuck is done under general anesthesia as an outpatient. Dr. Leigh uses a pain management pump for postoperative comfort to allow early walking the day of surgery to reduce postsurgical risk and speed recovery. Return to work is generally 1-3 weeks, but return to fully normal activities can be 2-3 months. Risks of blood transfusion and/or infection are very low, but this is not a good procedure for smokers or the very overweight patient because of healing and recovery concerns.
